04/24//10 A NEW SHOW

Welcome everyone. Studio Art and Soul will be showing some new, fresh paintings that might appeal to your senses. (three out of five is not bad) Come look at our art, enjoy a glass of wine and listen to the mellow sounds of David Carr Jr., a jazz sax player, at the Wine Therapist on May 1st from 5-8 P.M. Grant Schirpik: Valparaíso, Chile

A nice spurt of activity after a lull in postings. Thought I'd add mine to the mix. This painting is a departure for me in subject matter and style. I usually shy away from this type of scene because I like to capture detail, and there's just so much in the scene overwhelming me. I had to take a few deep breaths and break it way down to the simplest forms. I struggled with capturing the correct values to show the shadows and light, especially since most of the buildings are in shadow. Definitely learned a great deal. This is a view of Valparaiso on a beautiful spring day.

What a great day ... and time of day. Several of my favorite ART BUDDIES were invited to our good friend's family farm in Columbus, TX last year about this time. Three of us took a short road trip one morning. We found these darling cows... in the best lighting. (Notice the shadows and light.) The cows were very curious about us. Perfect models.

I'm working on a series of crows. Probably more than one series. It's been a lot of fun with this crows. The day I took the photos was a sunny day giving me the pleasure of great light and shadows.

San Miguel de Allende - The End of the Day

The studio seems to be back into normal activity. The studio tour in November, the holidays in December, the weather the beginning of January. We are back and working.

This painting is one I have been working on for a long time. I have attempted it many times over the years. Finally I came up with a composition I am happy with.

This was painted from a photo that I shot while in San Miguel de Allende several years ago. The colors are the actual colors. This city is amazing. I wandered "Who is in charge of the pallet used to paint the buildings of this city." That day, that moment was one I lucked on. The light cast on the wall, the woman with her beautifully colored fabrics, the color of the buildings around her. I almost lost the opportunity to get this shot. The woman walked past me as I was stepping out of a shop. If I hadn't taken the shot when I did, she would have rounded the corner and I would have lost this scene. Although, I am sure, if I followed her, the scene around the corner would have been as colorful. Who knows? I'm glad I captured this one.

01/02/10 Suzy Moritz

I spent more time doing the background than I did the portrait! Suzy was an easy subject to paint but that background was tricky. I used my palette knife on most of it. My goal this year is to finish painting portraits of all the artists at Studio Art and Soul. I am 1/4 of the way through. Gail Kirkham's husband bought hers but promised to let me borrow it for the Open Studio Tour. The hardest part of the whole task --- is to get a picture to paint. That includes me!!!

12/24/09 Portrait progress on Benjamin

This little guy is Benjamin Patillo. He is the son of a school friend. I have been working on him for several days - very slowly and carefully. Finally got the face and I think I'll wait until he is dry to put in the red car - since red is one of my demons!

Fabulous niece Tara recently sent a link of interest...seems that our military men and women often encounter abandoned, starving, or otherwise mistreated animals while serving their missions abroad. Understandably, the military does not encourage the bonds that inevitably develop and does not allow transport of these companion animals on military equipment. That said, the military personnel often develop deep, loving bonds with these dogs and cats, and do not want to leave them behind when their tours are over. International transportation of animals is a costly and paperwork laden endeavor, beyond the means of most of us; however, the SPCA International has set up a program to assist our troops in bringing their animals home to the USA. If interested, take a look at their site and click on the "Operation Baghdad Pups" button. Anyway the stories on that site inspired this painting. On the Easel...

On the Easel... Yesterday I painted on a large gallery wrap canvas...started this painting of the Golden Gate Bridge. I was using a photograph John Wyne took about a year ago. The paint is on very thick. I have to put some more shadows and highlights in, along with the cables. I wasn't sure that I had the right orange-red color on the bridge, so I came home from the studio and researched it. Sherwin Williams #6328 is the color on the bridge, so I will stop at a Sherwin Williams and pick up a paint chip. The official color name is Fireweed. We have great memories from that California trip a year ago...makes me want to go back. I can't wait to finish this one up. Maybe my post tomorrow will be the finished painting! Here is the larger fish in skillet painting...It has broad brush strokes and more detail than yesterday's posting. It is on a gallery wrap canvas, 18" x 18". It is larger and looser. I have been corrected by the person who caught these fish. They are probably brook or brown trout. But not rainbow. I think I wanted them to be rainbow because in my mind, they would be colorful. But I stand corrected. This painting will be on display at the upcoming studio tour.

Who ate all the pickles? by Grant Schirpik

Here's a quick study I completed a few weeks ago. Didn't really have anything ready to paint, so grabbed the pickle jar that was keeping the bathroom door ajar, and went to work. I have not painted glass but once or twice and painting letters wet on wet was a challenge. I have learned from viewing other artists' work that anything can be a subject matter for art. It's not what you paint, but how you paint it that makes it fresh and exciting. One of my favorite paintings is of a canvas painted to look like it's wrapped in butcher paper, ready for transport. Such an ordinary thing, but painted flawlessly. I didn't really push the boundaries with this one, but sometimes it's best to just put down the glass of wine and pick up a brush and go for it.

See Spot splash is more accurate, yes? And 'spot'? how many retrievers do you know named Spot? Not a regal name for one of the smartest working dogs on the planet, nevertheless, you get the idea. This is the start of something new for me, style-wise. First, it is larger (30x40x2)....I am happier painting in a large format, as the size allows for broader, more intense gestures.......and, instead of painting a 'picture', I am trying to capture the raw emotion in a specific moment. If you have ever had the pleasure of observing a well trained retriever on the hunt, you know exactly what I mean....these majestic animals yearn for the moment that they are released to retrieve, in this instance, a fallen duck....and the exploding joy of that moment is palpable. Northern Ireland by Carol Morgan

This is my submission to the Virtual Paintout that a couple of painters at our studio enjoy. It always amazes me that I'm able to find such lovely scenes on Google Earth. I've done N. Ireland, Florence, and Amsterdam. They have all been to my liking and make me long to travel there.
